Trailblazer Boars

Background

Hybrid boars have been developed to meet the changing needs by packers for hogs to match certain criteria in niche markets. High libido, powerful physical soundness, fast growth rates, excellent body conformation, meatiness and meat color are the attributes that are looking to be inherent in the genetics of these hybrid boars, to pass them on to their commercial offspring. PEAK Swine Genetics has developed such a hybrid boar line.

The Trailblazer boar combines the best attributes of two sire lines: Lacombe and Duroc. Both breeds are recognized in Canada for their body conformation, growth rate and carcass quality.

The Lacombe breed was developed in Canada at the federal Lacombe Research Station in 1958, incorporating Landrace, Chester White and Berkshire breeds to be a cross with Yorkshire pigs to produce quality breeding stock. In the development program, physical soundness, growth rate and white coloration were the primary considerations for genetic selection. The breed did not fail its researchers – even in the early 1970’s these boars and gilts grew to 90 kg liveweight in 135 days or less when they were measured on the Federal-Provincial Record of Performance Program. Although the Lacombe was not the leanest breed initially, it has been selected over the thirty years to be comparable to other breeds in backfat level. The characteristics of the Berkshire breed have been maintained in meat color and meat quality (tenderness and juiciness).

Research on the Duroc breed has found it to be fast growing, with excellent carcass quality. The Duroc is used primarily as a sire line, improving the carcass quality of market hogs bred from Yorkshire and Landrace crossbred gilts. The Duroc is the third most-popular breed of pigs in North America.

Growth rate, backfat thickness and carcass quality have all been extensively measured, evaluated and selected-for over the past years in PEAK Swine Genetics herds.
