With a return to profitability by some sectors of our economy, the pig industry should also recover from its losses in 2010. The success of the Federal Transition Program has taken more than 90,000 sows out of Canadian production and hence there should be opportunity for higher hog prices because of lowered supplies in North America. BMO economist Doug Porter’s presentation at the Banff Pork Seminar showed that the economy looks to be out of recession and that most economic indicators show slow growth for North America in the next few years. We will of course have to depend on our own governments to show fiscal restraint after the massive infusion of funds into the stimulus programs to support flagging and failing industries so that taxes don’t need to rise unnecessarily.
There was discussion at Banff as well regarding branding of Canadian and Alberta pork to make it more recognizable to local consumers. The local projects for grading or branding pork to segregate it from more generic products will include consideration for Lacombe Heritage Pork. We already have several of our customers that are marketing selected Lacombe-based pork products direct to consumers and hope that a more vigorous marketing plan can be implemented in the near future.

GROWTH in Performance Excellence:
Boars and gilts probed at Five Lakes Farms in January continue to show improvement in genetic traits. Biggest loin probed at 100 kg liveweight on Yorkshire gilts was 67.9 mm and Trailblazer boars was 68.0 mm.
