The Directors and Staff at PEAK Swine Genetics wish everyone a very Merry Christmas as well as a Happy New Year in 2007! We can count our blessings and give thanks for all good things we’ve achieved, and received, over the past year. Lower hog prices but excellent crops were welcomed again in 2006, after a good 2005.
We all wish you continued success in the coming year!
The regional meetings of Alberta Pork addressed some of the changes that are happening in our industry of late. It should be in the best interests of all producers to take note of these changes and to express any concerns to the executive of Alberta Pork, as it is our best representative to government and other national organizations. Maple Leaf Foods’ intent to change from its existing slaughter and processing strategy is a concern to producers, even if it doesn’t affect everyone and may benefit others. OLYMEL’s losses over the past three years may impact how it looks at the pork industry in the near term. Changes to government regulations will affect new and existing producers in how hogs are being produced in the home barn. It is up to every producer to speak with their government representatives, to express any concerns you see in how your industry is being challenged. Pig feed prices now may be affected by ethanol production in the US.

Milford Colony farrowed its first litter of Summit pigs with 11 liveborn piglets from the Yorkshire gilt. A higher proportion of barrows were born in this litter but they’ll likely find the 3 good gilts anticipated in each litter.
Lacombe gilts probed at Bloomsbury Farms in November averaged 120 Sire Line Index with 113 Dam Line Index. Gilt BL1852S had 174 SLI along with a 155 DLI. Lacombe boars average 124 SLI and 112 DLI, with BL1851S showing a 166 SLI and 152 DLI. These two pigs will certainly stay in the herd! |
