PEAK OF PERFORMANCE NEWS

4-H pig projects are alive and well in the BC interior. There were 71 youngsters showing 74 pigs in the recent Williams Lake and District 4-H swine judging competition in mid-August. Surprising is that nine swine clubs are active in the District and that over 200 children, seniors and juniors, are anxious to participate in the various programs and events. It was terrific to see the enthusiasm that most of the youngsters displayed in showing their pigs in the showmanship and best-groomed classes. Notwithstanding that costs are high in raising pigs where pigs are not common, the returns from the sale of 4-H pigs in the community makes it well-worthwhile to have a pig in the club.

Unfortunately, the hogs have to go to 100 Mile House (Williams Lake is about mile 170 on the Goldrush Trail) for slaughter and processing – there is a question whether that abattoir will remain in business beyond 2007. Pigs ranged in live weight between 79 kg – 139 kg, so their value will be variable to the extent of price/kg in the sales. One comment from a leader was “see that boy over there? He’s turned into something good from what he might have been if he hadn’t joined 4-H.” Quite a good insight and representation for this long-time program!

Hutterville Colony weaned a 6th parity sow’s litter of 13 weighing a total of 151.5 kg, along with a 4th parity litter of 13 piglets weighing 146.0 kg in the week of July 31. Most litters would average 120 kg, depending on the number of piglets weaned.

Thirty hogs from Roseglen Colony tested in a cutout at Independent Meats, ID had an average backfat of 0.6 inches (15.2 mm) on carcasses weighing 199 pounds (90.3 kg). Loin area averaged 8.04 sq inches, with the largest one being 10.4 sq in. (68 sq cm!). 255 pound live pigs dressed at 78% on arrival; carcass yield of lean meat was 57%. An equal mix of barrows and gilts made up the load.
