| We very much regret the death of
Dr. Frank Aherne on December 5, 2005. Our sincere sympathy and condolences
are extended to his wife Phyllis, children Mary Louise, Dominic, Jerry and
Nancy. Frank was a terrific representative for the pork industry on many
levels; as researcher and lecturer at the University of Alberta, as
extension specialist to the pork industry around the world, as technical
session organizer, as pork producer, as production specialist, as writer
(our own Newsletter presentations), as perennial award winner, as mentor and
especially as friend to many people in our industry. Frank was 70 years of
age. We’ll miss seeing him at the various conventions and symposia! Congratulations to Jurgen Preugschas of Five Lakes Farms on being elected Board Chair of Alberta Pork at its annual meeting December 6. Jurgen regains this important industry post after an hiatus of eleven years. “The new executive brings a strong combination of industry knowledge and outside experience to the Board at a time when there are many challenges. This is important in being able to meet the needs of the 1200 producers across the province”, says Jurgen. |

| Growth in Stewardship White Lake Colony was awarded the SPECTRA award for Environmental Stewardship at the recent annual meeting of Alberta Pork. Congratulations to White Lake Colony, its hog bosses and senior advisors on designing, developing and operation a 500 sow pig farm that has many attributes and factors that prevent pollution of the air, land or surrounding environment in the Barons area. Frank and Matthew were able to receive the award in person at the banquet. Well done by White Lake Colony in being awarded this SPECTRA! We also recognize Roy Barrett, a longtime pig breeder at Ponoka, for his Lifetime Achievement SPECTRA and Keith Robbins of Ontario Pork as a Friend of the Industry. |

Spring Valley Colony farrowed 30 litters in August that averaged 12.5 piglets born live. Citric acid inclusion in the sow diet may be a reason for the improvement in litter size. White Lake Colony sent a load of
300 hogs to OLYMEL in September that had an 82.7% dressing percentage. These
hogs weighed 113.5 kg on farm and gave carcasses of 93.8 kg. This high
dressing percentage compares to a general average of 79%-80% at most packing
plants. |
