PEAK OF PERFORMANCE NEWS

General Manager Comments

We got a good write-up in the newspaper regarding he Lacombe pig as a rare breed in Canada. Although the PEAK herds are the primary repository of the Lacombe genetics, we continue to make wonderful genetic improvement in the breed (see adjacent column). Trailblazer boars tested at Bloomsbury Farms have 9.1 mm backfat at 100 kg liveweight, with 64.1 mm lean depths at the same weight. These are terrific performance traits that can be bred into our commercial pigs to gain an advantage at packing plants paying a premium for leanness and meatiness.

The CPC reported in a media release from the International Meat Secretariat World Pork Congress in Nanjing China that producers are concerned about the state of pork production worldwide. In particular, producers emphasized the cost of production increases that face the industry and believe that immediate increases in wholesale and retail prices, and producer returns are needed for industry survival. The most significant issue is feed costs (70% of production costs), where worldwide grain prices have doubled as a result of poor harvests (China and Australia drought) and impact from growth in demand for grains to produce biofuels. Producer delegates from four continents recounted that there are substantial losses on every pig produced and that there will be large number of producers leaving the industry.

PEAK BookOf World Records

Lacombe gilts probed at Bloomsbury Farms showed a 202 Sire Line Index with a 146 Dam Line Index. The average EBV indexes for the 27 gilts probed were 134 SLI and 117 DLI; excellent performance levels to incorporate into our Trailblazer boars (Lacombe x Duroc hybrids).
Eighteen pig carcasses tested at Lacombe Research Centre (LRC) for the color gene from F&S Hog Farm measured a mere 13 mm backfat, with a 77 mm loin depth. Highest loin depth was 88 mm, with 11 pigs measuring above 75 mm. Just great!
Eleven Lacombe carcasses tested for the color gene at LRC had loin weights of 12.78 kg compared to the 19 test pigs at 11.37 kg, 12% higher than the average.
