PEAK OF PERFORMANCE NEWS

General Manager Comments

It was great to have Minister of Agriculture and Food Honorable George Groeneveld as guest speaker at the Alberta Pork Congress awards banquet in March. This is the new Minister’s first attendance at the congress and I commend him for his interest in the pork industry.
Minister Groeneveld noted four aspects that need to be accomplished in his portfolio:

1. Innovation: new ideas for increasing productivity and efficiencies in agricultural and particularly pork production and processing
2. Food Safety: assurance that all our raw and processed food products can be consumed safely, whether at home or abroad
3. Consumer Awareness: spread the word on the nutritional value of pork to all consumers
4. “Biorage is upon us”: new processing plants built for ethanol and biodiesel production will affect the value and availability of feed grain stocks for livestock production.

PEAK BookOf World Records

Jakubec Farms probed 11 Landrace boars that grew to 100 kg liveweight in 137 days, with individuals as low as 125, 127, 128 and 129 days. These four boars were not littermates. Lowest backfat probe was 7.1 mm, giving an EBV for fat of -1.23.

TLC Farms farrowed a second parity Summit sow with 16 live piglets. She was able to wean 15 of her piglets, all of good size.

Starbrite Colony reports that in-house selected Summit gilts have very good temperament and behavior. They have at least one hour of human contact each day, which helps to familiarize them with barn managers.

Rock Lake Colony farrowed and weaned 13 excellent piglets each from two Summit gilts during the month of March.
